OneWeb Wins FCC Approval for Expanded Satellite Constellation

Aug. 26, 2020, 7:50 PM UTC

The FCC has approved OneWeb’s request to deploy an additional 1,280 satellites to provide high-speed broadband services in the U.S.

The approval increases the number of satellites OneWeb can operate in the U.S. market from 720 to 2,000, offering the company “greater opportunities to deliver satellite-based broadband services to the public,” the agency said in an order released Wednesday.

The move is the latest FCC action to promote the deployment of new satellite mega-constellations by companies like OneWeb, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. that are capable of delivering high-speed internet.
